What is Telnet?

Telnet is a protocol that allows IT specialists and other professionals to make remote connections to computers. This protocol can also be used to connect remotely to devices like firewalls and routers. It was originally developed in the late 1960s. Back then, it was primarily used by universities and other institutions. In those environments, there wasn’t a pressing need for encryption, so the Telnet protocol doesn't include it. This didn't really become an issue until the Internet came into widespread use during the 1990s. SSH was developed to address security concerns, but Telnet continues to be widely used as well.

One of the top advantages of using a Telnet client is that it allows sys admins and other specialists to connect remotely to devices and computers through a command line interface. This is useful because it essentially recreates the remote computer or device on an IT professional's console, which allows him or her to resolve connectivity issues and perform other tasks from his location. This has always been useful, but it's even more important now that organizations have a global presence with offices around the world.

What is Telnet Used For?

IT specialists primarily use Telnet to resolve connectivity issues. However, it can also be used to perform a variety of other functions. Through a Telnet connection, it is possible to troubleshoot problems and come up with solutions. As a result, it's often possible to perform maintenance and resolve issues remotely. This is extremely valuable because so many businesses rely on data centers to house their servers. At the same time, issues need to be resolved quickly, and this can often be accomplished through Telnet.

In addition to being used to resolve connectivity issues, Telnet can be used for establishing X11 connections, forwarding TCP ports, and tunneling. This protocol is also often used to transfer files. In some instances, SSH file transfer, or SFTP, is used for this purpose. Other times, secure copy protocol, or SCP, is used. Either way, this protocol allows IT specialists to transfer files from one computer or device to another. This connection can usually be established quickly, and files can generally be transferred quickly as well.

Why is Telnet Important for Windows?

These days, the majority of businesses use computers that are running on Windows. As a result, it's essential to be able to establish Telnet connections with Windows computers. A Telnet client that doesn't allow for such connections is essentially useless. There are certainly businesses that don't use Windows, but they tend to be few and far between. As any IT professional can attest, it's extremely important to be able to establish remote connections with Windows-based PCs. Most Telnet clients are compatible with Windows, but it's important to check and make sure ahead of time.

As long as a Telnet or SSH client can connect to Windows computers and devices, it can be used to perform a variety of tasks from a remote location. By connecting to Windows-based network devices, sys admins and other specialists can solve problems quickly and easily. They can also make configuration changes through these clients. In order to provide the best service to end-users and servers, it's vital to use a client that offers support for Windows. All clients are not created equal, however, so it pays to consider plenty of options before committing to one.
