System Error: 231 - All pipe instances are busy (when using the DameWare NT Utilities RCMD Console View)

The information in this article applies to:
  • DameWare NT Utilities

This particular error message is very uncommon and as yet can only be attributed to AntiVirus software settings.  Everything from Microsoft points to the remote machine being busy.  It may be useful to try the Remote Console View at a later time or possibly even reboot the remote machine.  However, according to Microsoft, Antivirus software could be the primary cause of this issue.  Please consult the following article from Microsoft Support.

PRB: Anti-Virus Programs May Cause Named Pipes Connection Problem
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;170338

This error is not specific to DameWare NT Utilities (DNTU), but instead a Microsoft Windows System Error.  DNTU is simply asking the Operating System to execute Microsoft API calls and the Operating System is returning this error message back to DNTU.

Decription: When using DameWare's NT Utilities, anti-virus software running on a remote machine could potentially cause a RCMD connection attempt (via Named Pipes) to fail, which is exactly how DNTU's RCMD Console feature works. . You could also receive an error 231 - "Pipes busy" or "Connection Busy." Basically, what is happening is that the anti-virus software is configured to scan all files, and the anti-virus software treats the pipe as a file, thus attempts to scan it. This results in opening the pipe is a "deny all" mode that prevents the O/S from reading or writing to the pipe.
