How to enter registration / activation information into DameWare Development products

The information in this article applies to:
  • DameWare NT Utilities
  • DameWare Mini Remote Control
  • DameWare Exporter

The following information may be helpful when attempting to register all DameWare Development products.

1.  Registration information is stored within the Operating System (not within DameWare's binary files) and it is stored profile specific.  Therefore, it must be entered into the software on each different machine and under each different user profile that needs to use the software on that machine, even when multiple users are running the software from the same machine (Citrix Server, Terminal Services, etc.).   There is no way to register the software for all users on one machine under the same profile.

If the software is registered under one user profile (i.e. Administrator), then the user logs off and logs back on under a different user profile (Logoff/Logon, use RunAs, join a Domain, Disjoin from a Domain, etc.), the software will show as an Evaluation copy under the current logged on user profile until the registration/activation information is re-entered under this user profile.  While using the software in Evaluation mode, a user cannot disable certain notification features when connecting to a remote machine using the DameWare Mini Remote Control (DMRC) software until it is registered again under the current user profile.  See the following FAQ for more information about this behavior: http://www.dameware.com/support/faq/faq.aspx?Category=103#120

There is a way to "batch" register the software using a specific set of Registry keys.  More information about this topic is covered in DameWare's online forum: How to include registration information in the MSI

2.  The correct version of the software must be installed (4.x, 5.x, 6.x, etc.) for the Registration / Activation information to be accepted, otherwise the software will reject it.  Registration / activation information is generated for specific major versions of the software (i.e. 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, etc.).  Therefore, registration information for version 5.x products will not work in version 4.x or version 6.x.  Likewise version 6.x registration/activation  information will not work in version 4.x or version 5.x products.   Registration/Activation information only works within the same Major Version for which it was created.  Registration/activation  information for version 6.x will work in any 6.x release of the software (past, present, or future), but it will not work in version 5.x products.

Licenses for older versions of the software can be upgraded to the current release by contacting DameWare's Sales department to obtain a new license that is compatible with the newer version of the software.  However, upgrades within the same Major Release (v6.x to v6.x, etc.) do not require a new set of registration information.

Click the following link to apply for an upgrade: https://www.dameware.com/legacy/update/registration.  If problems arise while requesting an upgrade online, contact our Sales department at sales@dameware.com, or at (985) 871-7519 M-F 9:00am-5:00pm CST to obtain a new license that is compatible with version 6.

3.  The correct product must be installed.  A license for the DMRC program cannot be used to register the DameWare NT Utilities (DNTU) software or the DameWare Exporter (DEXP).  However, since DNTU is the "parent" application, a license for the DNTU will work in all three products (DNTU, DMRC, & DEXP).

Once the correct product and version are installed, properly enter the registration / activation information into the software.  Instead of re-typing the information, simply Copy and Paste to alleviate potential typographical errors.  Registration / Activation information must be entered EXACTLY as it is sent from the Sales department.  Otherwise the software will state that the registration / activation information is invalid.

4.  The "license" number is not an Activation Key (i.e. 1234567890123456-78), and cannot be used by itself to register the software.

5.   It may be necessary to enter the activation information into all three products.  Even though the DMRC program and DEXP are included in the full DNTU suite, the DMRC program and DEXP are still separate stand-alone applications.  Normally, these other applications would automatically pick up DNTU's registration information, however, sometimes that does not happen.  Therefore, there may be times when it is necessary to enter the registration information individually into each product.

DameWare offers several different ways of entering the activation / registration information into the software.

Example 1:    Entering the "old-style" registration information:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registered Name:       xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Number:       xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
**Note:  This is the same information entered via the batch registry keys mentioned above.

Example 2: Entering a "New-style" Activation Key:
