How to create an MSI package with the DMRC Client Agent MSI Builder

The information in this article applies to:
  • DameWare NT Utilities - Version(s) 6.x and above
  • DameWare Mini Remote Control
  • - Version(s) 6.x and above

The easiest and most efficient way to install the DameWare Mini Remote Control (DMRC) Client Agent Service on a remote machine is by building a Windows Installer (MSI) package via the new DMRC Client Agent MSI Builder included in version 6.x and above.  The DMRC Client Agent MSI Builder allows the user to build custom MSI packages including any custom settings (INI or Registry) to deploy the DMRC Client Agent Service in his environment.  These MSI packages can then be sent to clients (emailed, distributed via Group Policies, etc.) via any of the existing distribution methods.

To run the MSI builder, simply select Start / Programs / DameWare .... / DameWare Mini Remote Control Client Agent MSI Builder.  Or, navigate directly to the C:\Program Files\DameWare Development\DameWare.... installation folder, and launch the DWRCSMSI.EXE file from there.

When the MSI Builder opens, select the appropriate target Operating System, then click on View Settings to make settings modifications via the DameWare Mini Remote Control Properties GUI.

Once all modifications have been completed, click on OK to exit the DameWare Mini Remote Control Properties dialog.  Then click on the Build button to build the custom MSI package containing all the custom settings, which will be created in the DameWare installation folder.

DWRCS9x.MSI = 95/98/Me
DWRCS32.MSI = NT/2000/XP/2003
DWRCSVista32 = 32-bit Vista

Important Notes:

  1. Currently, the DameWare MSI Builder does not support creation of MSI packages for installation on 64-bit Operating Systems.  For 64-bit Operating Systems, manually install the Service, or install it via the DameWare NT Utilities software's Servcies View.  It can also be installed directly from within the DMRC software.

  2. In order to build MSI packages with the DMRC Client Agent MSI Builder (DWRCSMSI.EXE), the local machine must be running Windows 2000 or above, and also have version 2.0 or higher of Microsoft's Windows Installer (MSI) software installed.  Version 2.0 of Microsoft's Windows Installer should automatically be included in Windows 2000-SP1 and above, but additional information on how to install it can be found in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.  However, only version 1.1 or above of Microsoft's Windows Installer is required to run these MSI packages created by the MSI Builder.

    Windows Installer Redistributables

  3. Include FIPS Modules (version 6.7 and above only):

    DameWare Development, LLC has partnered with RSA Security, Inc. to use the BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition cryptography module, which has met all Level 1 requirements for Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 compliance when operated in "FIPS Mode."  However, in order to take advantage of this new FIPS Mode option the RSA FIPS Modules must also be on the remote machine, which can easily be included in the MSI package by enabling the "Include FIPS Modules" checkbox.  When this new "FIPS Mode" option is set, the DameWare Mini Remote Control software will exclusively use the BSAFE Crypto-C ME FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library, which in turn will only allow FIPS-approved algorithms to be utilized.  This new "FIPS mode" functionality is included in version 6.7 and above of the DameWare Mini Remote Control software.
